Guitar Pedal Signal Chain Order: Where to Put Drive, Modulation, Delay & Reverb

Discover the optimal signal chain order for guitar pedals. Learn where to place tuners, wah, fuzz, overdrives, modulation, delays, and reverbs.

Standard Guitar Pedal Signal Chain Sequence

While there are no legal laws in tone crafting, following the standard signal chain sequence ensures maximum clarity, low noise floors, and predictable effect interactions.

Standard signal flow moves from Guitar Input ➔ Utilities ➔ Gain/Drive ➔ Modulation ➔ Time-Based FX ➔ Amplifier.

The 5 Signal Chain Zones

Zone 1: Dynamics & Pitch (Guitar Input)

  • Tuner (Boss TU-3, TC Polytune): Needs a pure, un-effected guitar signal to detect pitch accurately. Place 1st.
  • Buffers: Restores high-frequency clarity lost over long cable runs.
  • Wah / Pitch Shifters (DigiTech Whammy): Best placed before distortion so pitch sweeps cleanly.
  • Zone 2: Gain & Distortion

  • Fuzz (Germanium / Silicon Fuzz Face): Fuzz pedals like Germanium transistors must react directly to your guitar pickup impedance. Place before buffers if possible!
  • Overdrive & Distortion (Tube Screamer, Klon, RAT): Boosts signal harmonics. Stack light overdrives into heavy distortion.
  • Zone 3: Modulation (Pre or Post Drive)

  • Phaser, Chorus, Flanger, Tremolo:
  • Post-Drive: Clean, lush, distinct modulation sweeps.
  • Pre-Drive: Vintage 70s Hendrix style chewy phase & swoosh.
  • Zone 4: Time-Based Effects (Delay & Reverb)

  • Delay (Strymon Timeline, Boss DD-8): Repeat echoes of your distorted tone.
  • Reverb (Strymon BigSky, EHX Oceans 11): Creates spatial depth. Always place after delay so echoes decay inside the reverb hall.
  • Zone 5: Utility & Volume

  • Noise Gate (ISP Decimator, Boss NS-2): Tames high-gain hiss.
  • Volume Pedal: Place after drives to control overall stage volume without altering drive gain saturation.
