Patch Cable Clearance & Jack Types: Pancake vs Straight Connectors

Compare right-angle pancake plugs, solderless patch kits, and straight 1/4 inch jacks for tight pedalboard spacing.

Maximizing Pedal Density with Smart Cable Routing

When building a high-density pedalboard, the physical size of your patch cable jacks often dictates how close two pedals can sit.

1. Comparing Jack Connector Types

  • Standard Right-Angle Molded Cables: Wide barrel width (~18mm). Easy to find but forces large gaps between pedals.
  • Pancake Right-Angle Plugs (EBS / Switchcraft 228): Flat profile (~12mm). Excellent for side-jack compact pedals, but can collide if two side-jacks align at the exact same height.
  • Ultra-Slim SquarePlug / Solderless (SquarePlug SP400 / Evidence Audio SIS): The smallest 1/4" connectors in existence (~8.3mm width). Allows pedals to sit almost flush against each other.

  • 2. Top Tips for Clean Under-Deck Cable Management

    1. Use adhesive cable tie mounts and zip ties under Pedaltrain or RockBoard rails.

    2. Separate audio patch cables from AC/DC power supply cables to prevent 60Hz hum induction.

    3. Leave 1 to 2 inches of slack near pedal jacks to prevent strain on internal PCB jacks.
